The Canada Strong Pass is a federal program, not a ticket. During set periods, admission to places run by Parks Canada costs nothing, camping is 25% cheaper, and young people get deals on trains and museums. In 2026 the summer period ran from 19 June to 7 September.
Green Gables Heritage Place is a Parks Canada national historic site, so it was free for those twelve weeks. Regular fees have applied since 8 September.
The quick answer
From 19 June to 7 September 2026, the Canada Strong Pass gave free admission to Parks Canada sites, Green Gables included, plus 25% off Parks Canada camping. It was open to all visitors, from Canada or abroad, with nothing to buy or sign up for. Regular fees apply again: C$8.25 per adult at Green Gables until 31 October, youth free. No 2027 pass, summer or winter, has been announced.
What did the Canada Strong Pass cover in 2026?
Free admission to Parks Canada's national parks, national historic sites and marine conservation areas, 25% off Parks Canada camping, and youth discounts on VIA Rail and museums.
The Green Gables pass page puts it in one line: "free admission to national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas operated by Parks Canada and a 25% discount on camping fees." The offer was valid from 19 June to 7 September 2026.
The wider program, run by Canadian Heritage, added deals that depend on age. On VIA Rail, children 17 and under travelled free with an adult and 18 to 24-year-olds got 25% off. National museums were free for 17 and under and half price for 18 to 24, and participating provincial and territorial museums offered similar terms.
| Benefit | Who | At Green Gables? |
|---|---|---|
| Free admission at Parks Canada sites | Everyone | Yes, the house, barn, exhibits and trails |
| 25% off Parks Canada camping | Everyone | No camping on site; applied at PEI National Park |
| VIA Rail: free under 18, 25% off 18 to 24 | Young travellers | Not relevant: no passenger rail on PEI |
| National museums: free under 18, 50% off 18 to 24 | Young visitors | Not relevant |
Who could use the Canada Strong Pass?
Everyone. Canadian Heritage says the pass was available to all visitors, whether they live in Canada or come from abroad.
The name sounds like a perk for Canadians. It was not limited to them. The official About the Canada Strong Pass page is clear: "The Pass is available to all visitors, whether you live in Canada or come from abroad." It also says the pass "is not a physical pass that you need to purchase, sign up for, or collect." You simply walked in.
Free meant free admission, not free everything. Parks Canada's free admission pages say it applied only to places operated by Parks Canada during regular hours, and that parking, reservations, guided programs not normally included with admission, and third-party services were still charged. A tour from Charlottetown cost the same as ever, because the price pays for the guide and the van.
Did the free pass make Green Gables busier?
Yes. In summer 2025, the first year of the pass, CBC reported Green Gables visits up about 20%, with more than 58,000 visitors by mid summer.
The CBC report quoted Parks Canada staff on a 20% rise over 2024 and a peak day of close to 3,000 visitors. Staff also noticed fewer large tour buses and more independent travellers, which spread the crowds a little. Across the country, Canadian Heritage reported that visits to Parks Canada places rose 13% during the 2025 pass.
Parks Canada expected the same in 2026 and said so plainly on the Green Gables page: "Expect very high visitation in 2026", with line-ups forming early in the day, waits for the house and trails, and parking that "may reach capacity earlier than usual." It also warned that cruise days in Charlottetown bring scheduled commercial groups. Busiest hours are 11am to 3pm in July and August. Arriving at 9am was the fix then, and it still is.

What does Green Gables cost now that the pass has ended?
Since 8 September, regular fees apply: C$8.25 per adult and C$6.75 per senior until 31 October, youth 17 and under free.
Parks Canada's admission page confirms the offer has ended and that regular fees apply to all admission and camping from 8 September 2026. Green Gables has three price bands on its fee list. Youth admission is free all year, a rule that dates from 2018 and has nothing to do with the Canada Strong Pass.
| Green Gables season band | Adult | Senior | Youth (17 and under) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 July to Labour Day | C$10.00 | C$8.50 | Free |
| Shoulder: 1 May to 30 June, day after Labour Day to 31 October | C$8.25 | C$6.75 | Free |
| Off season, 1 November to 30 April (appointment only) | C$5.00 | C$4.25 | Free |

Check dates for the small-group Green Gables tourWill there be a Canada Strong Pass in 2027?
Nothing has been announced. Parks Canada lists three past free periods and no future ones.
The pass has run three times so far, according to Parks Canada: 20 June to 2 September 2025, 12 December 2025 to 15 January 2026, and 19 June to 7 September 2026. The admission page now reads "This offer has ended" and shows no new dates, and the Canadian Heritage page says "This program is closed." News coverage when the summer period ended on 7 September did not mention a return either.
A holiday edition ran last winter, so a repeat is possible. Possible is all it is. We found no announcement of a winter 2026-27 period or a summer 2027 one, and we would not plan a trip around free admission. At C$10.00 per adult at the top rate, it is a small part of a PEI budget anyway. We will update this post if Ottawa announces anything.
Does free admission make a Green Gables tour worth less?
No. A tour price pays for transport and a guide; admission is a small slice of it.
Adult entry to Green Gables tops out at C$10.00. The group half days from Charlottetown cost US$85 to US$113 per person. Do the maths and the ticket is a minor part. If you have a car, you never needed a tour: drive the 40 km, pay at the door and stay as long as you like. If you arrive by cruise ship or without wheels, a tour still earns its price, pass or no pass.
One detail to check: the shore tour's listing puts Green Gables entry in the price. For the small-group classic and the express tour, the listing summary does not say whether entry is included, so check the inclusions on the listing before you book.
