One day in PEI

One day is not much for an island 1,100 km around its shore, but it is enough for the two things most people come for: Anne country on the north shore and an evening in Charlottetown.

Prince Edward Island is small, 64 km across at its widest, but driving it tip to tip takes three to four hours. With one day you cannot do the whole island. Pick the north shore around Cavendish for the morning and Charlottetown for the afternoon, and you will see the island's best-known side.

The plan below works from late spring to the end of October, when Green Gables is open. Opening times come from Parks Canada; the food and town picks are Tourism PEI's.

The quick answer

Leave Charlottetown by 8:15 am, be at Green Gables when it opens at 9, then walk the cliffs and beach in PEI National Park around Cavendish. Have seafood in North Rustico or New Glasgow, then be back in Charlottetown by mid-afternoon for the waterfront, a walking tour and dinner. Without a car, a four-hour small-group tour covers the morning.

How should you spend one day in PEI?

North shore in the morning, Charlottetown in the afternoon. Green Gables at 9 am, the cliffs and beach before lunch, the city waterfront and dinner after.

Here is the day we would plan from a Charlottetown hotel or cruise ship, with a car. The times are our advice, not anyone's schedule.

What should you not miss in PEI?

Green Gables, the red cliffs and beaches of PEI National Park, Charlottetown's old centre, a lobster or oyster meal, and the Confederation Bridge if you come by car.

  • Green Gables: the farmhouse behind Anne of Green Gables, open 1 May to 31 October.
  • The north shore: PEI National Park runs along it, with red sandstone cliffs, dunes and long beaches. Cavendish Beach is the busiest; parking fills before 11 am in summer.
  • Charlottetown: St. Dunstan's Basilica, Province House and the harbour, all on foot.
  • Seafood: Tourism PEI brands the island Canada's Food Island for its potatoes, lobster, mussels and oysters.
  • The Confederation Bridge: 12.9 km long, opened in 1997, and the world's longest bridge over ice-covered water.

Lighthouses are the bonus: Covehead Harbour Lighthouse at Stanhope is on the same coast.

What are the best things to do in Anne country?

Green Gables, Lovers Lane and the Haunted Wood, Montgomery's grave in Cavendish Cemetery, the Anne museum at Park Corner and a carriage ride by the Lake of Shining Waters.

Tourism PEI's Anne itinerary starts in Cavendish and works west. In one morning you can manage the Cavendish part:

  • Green Gables Heritage Place with Lovers Lane and the Haunted Wood Trail.
  • Cavendish Cemetery, where Montgomery is buried, and Cavendish United Church, where her organ is on display.
  • Montgomery Park, with a bronze sculpture of the author and her cat.
  • The Anne of Green Gables Store in Avonlea Village.

Park Corner and New London need another two hours or so. If you can only pick one extra, our Anne sites guide helps you choose. In New Glasgow, the Prince Edward Island Preserve Company makes a good stop for jam and lunch.

The north shore without a car: Green Gables, a seaside village, cliffs and lighthouses in four hours, pickup available.

What is the prettiest town in PEI?

Tourism PEI's own Islander ambassadors name Victoria-by-the-Sea, North Rustico, South Rustico and New Glasgow for shops and patios. Charlottetown's old centre is the pretty city.

The picks come from Tourism PEI's Ask an Islander service. North Rustico and New Glasgow are both on the Green Gables Shore, minutes from Cavendish, so they slot into a one-day plan. North Rustico has Route 6 Fish 'n Chips. New Glasgow has the lobster suppers and the Preserve Company.

Victoria-by-the-Sea is on the south shore, well away from Anne country. On a one-day trip it competes with the north shore, and we would save it for a longer stay or a drive toward the bridge.

What is PEI famous for?

Anne of Green Gables, red cliffs and red sand, lobster, mussels, oysters and potatoes, and about 1,100 km of shoreline on an island 64 km across at its widest.

The Tourism PEI 2026 guide leans on food first: potatoes, lobster, mussels and oysters, under the slogan Canada's Food Island. Then the coast. The south shore has red cliffs and red sand, and the north shore has white sand. The island also claims more than 400 golf fairways.

Then there is Anne. Anne of Green Gables has sold an estimated 50 million copies in at least 36 languages, and it brings visitors from as far as Japan. The Charlottetown Festival stages the musical every summer; in 2026 it ran until 5 September, according to Confederation Centre.

Can you see PEI in one day without a car?

Yes, with a tour. A four-hour Green Gables tour covers the north shore in the morning, and Charlottetown is walkable for the afternoon.

The small-group tour lists pickup and names Green Gables, a seaside village, cliff outlooks and lighthouses. The express tour is shorter at 3.5 to 4 hours. Either one has you back in town for lunch. In summer 2026 there was also a C$2 bus to Cavendish, from 23 June to 7 September, but it suits slow days better than tight ones.

For the afternoon in Charlottetown, the architecture walk takes two hours past St. Dunstan's Basilica, Province House and the Confederation Centre. The Harbour Hopper drives the streets and then splashes into the harbour in under an hour, which kids love. The food walk fills three hours and doubles as lunch or an early dinner.

What does one day in PEI leave out?

Most of the island. The east and west ends are each a couple of hours from Charlottetown, and Tourism PEI suggests at least three or four days.

Driving tip to tip on Route 2 takes three to four hours, so a one-day trip leaves out the eastern and western ends of the island, the south shore beaches and long lazy afternoons on the sand. Tourism PEI's Islander ambassadors say three or four days at the least, and a week for a relaxed trip.

One day still works if you are realistic. Do one coast well instead of three badly. If you are choosing when to come, the best time to visit PEI goes month by month.

Where should you eat on a one-day PEI trip?

Lobster in a supper hall at New Glasgow, fish and chips in North Rustico, or oysters and mussels back in Charlottetown.

Tourism PEI singles out New Glasgow Lobster Suppers, serving since 1958, as the original PEI lobster supper. Fisherman's Wharf Lobster Suppers is another supper hall, and Route 6 Fish 'n Chips in North Rustico promises fresh fish, fresh clams and hand-cut fries. At Green Gables itself, the Cordial Café does coffee, baking and Island-made ice cream.

Many north shore restaurants are seasonal, so in May or October check that yours is open before you drive. Back in Charlottetown the choice is wide and open later. Late September brings Fall Flavours, a food and drink festival, which ran from 24 September to 10 October in 2026.
