Since 1 August 2025, Ottawa has paid to bring the Confederation Bridge toll down to C$20 and to halve fares on the federally supported ferries, including Wood Islands to Caribou. For anyone driving to PEI from the mainland, it is one of the biggest cost changes in years.
Below are the current prices from the operators' own pages, how and when you pay, a side-by-side of the two routes, and what is known about how long the cuts will last.
The quick answer
The Confederation Bridge toll is C$20 for any car or motorcycle, paid only when you leave PEI at Borden-Carleton. The Wood Islands-Caribou ferry costs C$43 per standard car with passengers, plus a C$2.50 fuel surcharge, and sails until 20 December 2026. Both reductions remain in force. Arrive one way and leave the other, and you pay only for the route you take out.
How much is the Confederation Bridge toll now?
C$20 for a passenger vehicle or motorcycle, down from C$50.25. You pay once, when you leave PEI.
The official toll table lists C$20.00 for the first two axles of a vehicle and C$0.00 for each extra axle, which means towing a trailer adds nothing. Motorcycles are C$20.00 too. The toll is "calculated for the round-trip" and collected only when leaving the island, at the toll plaza in Borden-Carleton. Cash, Interac and major credit cards are accepted, and the bridge's home page currently asks drivers to pay by card.
The cut came from the Prime Minister's Office in July 2025, taking the toll for all vehicles "from over $50 to $20" from 1 August 2025. Walkers and cyclists cannot use the 12.9 km deck. They ride a shuttle instead, at C$4.75 for a pedestrian and C$9.50 for a cyclist.
| Confederation Bridge | Toll |
|---|---|
| Car, van or SUV (first 2 axles) | C$20.00 |
| Each additional axle (trailer, camper) | C$0.00 |
| Motorcycle | C$20.00 |
| Pedestrian shuttle | C$4.75 |
| Cyclist shuttle | C$9.50 |
What does the Wood Islands-Caribou ferry cost in 2026?
C$43 for a standard car including passengers, plus a C$2.50 fuel surcharge. Walk-on adults pay C$11.50.
Northumberland Ferries' 2026 fare table sets C$43 for a vehicle up to 20 feet long and 7 feet high, passengers included, the same price reserved one way or round trip. Vehicles under 20 feet add a C$2.50 fuel surcharge; anything bigger pays C$10. A car with a trailer up to 20 feet is C$43, 21 to 40 feet C$58. Motorcycles are C$22.50 and a cyclist C$11. Before the cut, an Ask an Islander answer put the car fare at C$91.
The crossing takes 75 minutes between Wood Islands, PEI, and Caribou, Nova Scotia. It is seasonal: the current schedule runs to 20 December 2026 with four sailings a day each way, leaving Wood Islands at 07:00, 10:00, 15:00 and 18:00. Booking ahead is recommended. Ferries.ca says standby travel from Nova Scotia to PEI has no fee, but space depends on the day.

Bridge or ferry: which is better for a PEI trip?
The bridge is cheaper, faster and open all year. The ferry suits travellers coming from Nova Scotia and anyone happy to trade 75 minutes for a sea crossing.
On price alone the bridge wins: C$20 against C$45.50 for a car with the fuel surcharge. On time it wins too: Tourism PEI says you drive the 12.9 km in about 10 minutes. Geography often decides for you. From Halifax or Cape Breton, the ferry can save a long detour through New Brunswick. From Moncton or Quebec, the bridge is the natural route.
The best trick is the loop. Both are charged when you leave PEI, and only on the route you use to leave. Come in on one and leave on the other, and you pay once. Tourism PEI confirms it: arrive by bridge and leave by ferry, and "you will only have to pay the fare for the Northumberland Ferry."

Are the reduced tolls still in force for 2026-27?
Yes. The C$20 toll and the halved ferry fares are on the operators' own pages now, and neither has an announced end date.
The bridge's toll page shows C$20.00 today, and the ferry's fare page is headed 2026 fares with the C$43 car rate. The PMO release did not call the cuts permanent or temporary. CBC reported when they took effect that the ferry fares "won't change for at least the next four years", until the contract with Northumberland Ferries is up, and that Ottawa would revisit the bridge toll when the operating deal, then with seven years left, expires.
The Parliamentary Budget Officer costed the measure at C$206 million over 2025-26 to 2029-30. For a trip next season, plan on C$20 by bridge and about C$45.50 by ferry, and check both pages before you travel.
What does the cheaper toll mean for a Green Gables trip?
Driving yourself is cheaper than it was, and with a car you do not need a tour. Green Gables is about 40 km from Charlottetown.
Saving C$30 on the bridge tips the maths further toward a self-drive trip. Green Gables Heritage Place is in Cavendish on the north shore, about 40 km from Charlottetown, and adult admission is C$8.25 to C$10.00 during the season. With your own car, you can park, see the house and trails at your own pace, and add the beaches. Our one day in PEI plan shows how to fill the rest of the day.
Timing still rules. The house is open daily from 1 May to 31 October, and only by appointment in November, as our season-end post explains. The ferry stops for the winter after 20 December, but the bridge never does.

Can you get to Green Gables without a car?
Yes. Take the bridge shuttle or the ferry on foot, fly into Charlottetown, or arrive by cruise ship, then join a tour from Charlottetown.
Without a car the toll cut matters less, and the tours matter more. Island transit does not reach the other Anne sites at New London and Park Corner, and a half-day tour from Charlottetown takes care of the driving. The express tour is the tightest of them, built around Green Gables Heritage Place with north shore scenery on the way, and pickup is available.
Compare it with the alternatives in our tours from Charlottetown guide before you choose.
